Church of Hed is the solo project of the American spacerock band Quarkspace’s drummer, synthesist, and producer, Paul Williams. With Quarkspace seemingly in retirement or hiatus, Church of Hed is Williams’s main focus. The music involves aural travelogues, inspired by progressive and space rock and Berlin School electronica. Paul plays drums, keyboards, and synthesizers; he composes songs, beats, and loops, and he (thankfully) rarely sings.

Church of Hed’s debut album came out in late 2002. A few tours of the Eastern United States followed over the next two years, before Paul decided to retire from touring. Since he plays both drums and keyboards, it is difficult to do both tasks simultaneously. The commercial constraints typical of underground music makes paying for touring musicians and roadies untenable.

The long-delayed travelogue down Route 66, Rivers of Asphalt, saw its release in 2010. Williams did little promotion for this album as he wanted to pair those efforts with the never-released Quarkspace album, All These Suns, their follow-up to the highly-regarded Drop. Still, the album garnered positive reviews from everyone who received a promo copy.

After Quarkspace entered retirement in 2014, Williams focused his efforts on Electric Sepulcher, released in 2015. As the first Church of Hed album recorded with the project finally being his main priority, the album’s composition and playing are his best yet. Brandenburg Heights arrived in 2016 with Sandstoned following in 2018. So there.
