It is already dark as I sit to write this. It’s been dark for an hour. What plants are left in the greenhouse survive by dropping their large leaves and sprouting tiny “winter leaves”. Out in the garden spaces, growth has now stopped. In some places it is already snowing (not here, just raining), and it’s a cold wind. We’ve been observing the winter in the northern hemisphere by bundling up, complaining about the weather, and getting ready for the Solstice which is worth looking forward to.
As the winter solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere at least) approaches, we make our own light, in whatever ways we can, be it from kindness to strangers, love for our closest friends and family members, lighting candles or a cozy fire in the fireplace, or just quietly bundled up reading a book, or in my case, playing for two hours.
